Becoming a better communicator has always been important. Before the pandemic, during the pandemic, and after the pandemic. It’s a life skill that helps amplify your impact, both professionally and personally. It’s not a soft skill, it’s an essential skill.

Many of you know me as a keynote speaker and magician, filled with confidence and pizzazz! (I’ve always wanted to use that word). But what if I told you that I used to be shy, awkward, and a terrible communicator? Well, it’s true – and if you don’t believe me, here’s a video of me when I first started my journey to improve my communication skills in 2014. Listen for the “ums”, “ahs”, and the mumbling!

Okay, I can only bear to watch 19 seconds of this video. I have more vulnerability work to do - I know. The video gets worse as I go on. Here’s the tough part to admit: In the above video, I did a year of practice and training to get to that point. I know some people will watch it and say, “It wasn’t that bad!”, but compared to my ability now it was night and day. Here’s a short clip of me in early 2020 at a conference (when we could still gather in numbers!).

As I improved my ability to communicate and present, the trajectory of my life started to change. I began to speak up more; I was better able to articulate the value that I had to offer; I was able to form stronger connections with people; and I have become more influential.

I share this with you because I wanted to prove that the ability to communicate masterfully isn’t something that people are born with - it’s a skill. And it’s a skill that you can learn and develop. Every day we communicate, yet this is an axe we rarely sharpen.

I love Pareto’s principle, otherwise known as the 80-20 rule. The 80-20 rule states that 80% of outcomes (outputs) come from 20% of causes (inputs). What’s the 80-20 when it comes to your personal development goals this year? What’s the 20% of things you can improve upon that will bring you 80% of the results?

Communication skills are a part of that 20%.

The smallest changes in the way you communicate can have the most dramatic impact upon how people perceive you. I want you to watch some of these before and after videos to see how the smallest changes can have a dramatic impact on how you are heard and understood.

People tend to think that when it comes to communication skills, they have to improve hundreds of things. In reality, all it takes is FIVE small changes for you to transform how you are heard and understood.

You’ll hear me say the following over and over again until you want to vomit:

“You may be 10/10 with your ability technically, but if your ability to communicate is only 3/10 - do you think people will perceive you to be a 10/10 or a 3/10? You are only as good as you can communicate.”
